Today the Washington Mystics have announced that they have signed Leilani Mitchell. Mitchell, a point guard, played for the Mystics in 2016 following the Olympic games.
By signing Mitchell, the Mystics have added an exceptional three-point shooter. In 2019, she maintained a 43-percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc and had a career-high of 74 threes. A walking bucket. No wonder she was named the 2019 WNBA Most Improved Player.
Mitchell has spent the last three seasons with the Phoenix Mercury alongside Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner. She took on the role of starting point guard for the Mercury following Taurasi’s back injury. She ended the season with the stat line of 12.8 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds.
Mystics head coach Mike Thibault is thrilled to have Leilani back on the squad and we totally understand why. The Mystics are known for their three-point shooting capabilities, and Mitchell will be another asset.
The 2019 WNBA champs are a complete threat when it comes to offense. The Mystics averaged 112.9 points per game last season, which was the highest in the league. The team also had the highest three-pointers made with an average of 9.3 per game.
Unfortunately, the defending champs were not able to keep Kristi Toliver, who played with the Mystics for three seasons. Toliver averaged 13 points per game last season. While fans are sad to see her go, signing Mitchell will surely provide the Mystics with the points that Toliver provided.
Welcome back to the district, Leilani!
