Washington appeared to be in trouble with 6:43 remaining in the fourth quarter. Chicago’s Cheyenne Parker connected on a mid range jumper to give the Sky a 73-64 led.
6:43 is plenty of time in the WNBA, but things weren’t looking all that great for Washington. Earlier in the fourth quarter, the Mystics trailed the Sky 72-62. Now Chicago is threatening to pull away in this game.
But the Mystics are the defending WNBA champions for a reason. Even with a shortened rotation, the Mystics battled back to take a one point led with 1:14 remaining in the game.
What allowed the Mystics to climb their way back into the game was their aggression on the offensive end. They were able to get Chicago into the penalty fairly early in the fourth quarter.
Chicago played solid defense throughout the game, holding Washington to just 41.9% shooting from the field. However, Chicago was a little too aggressive on defense at time, picking up a fair amount of non shooting fouls. This allowed Washington to have a 20-7 advantage from the free throw line.
As exciting as Washington’s comeback was, Chicago had an answer. Cheyenne Parker made a layup to put the Sky up by two points with just 22.1 seconds remaining in the game.
Moments later, Ariel Atkins was able to tie the game at 86, after Chicago’s Diamond Deshields was called for a loose ball foul.
Unfortunately, Cheyenne Parker was able to make a layup with 5.9 seconds left that game the Sky the lead for good. She missed a free throw for a potential And 1, which gave Washington a chance to go for the win. But Washington struggled to execute their last play of the game.
Ariel Powers led the way for the Mystics with 24 points, with four three pointers. Ariel Atkins chipped in 20 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 2 steals.
Washington will be back in action on Wednesday August 5th, as they get set to take on the Las Vegas Aces. The two teams last played against each other on September 24 2019, during the WNBA Semi Finals.
As of August 1, the Aces are 1-3 on the season. With their last game being a 102-95 loss to the Phoenix Mercury.
