The Wizards will be back in DC on Wednesday night to take on the San Antonio Spurs. With a 3-8 record, Washington is currently in 14th place in the Eastern Conference.
A record of 3-8 is usually an indicator of a struggling basketball team. But that’s not necessarily the case with Washington. It’s well known that Washington is not a good defensive team. However, it’s a completely different story on the offensive end.
As of November 19, Washington has the third most efficient offense in the NBA, with an offensive rating of 112.4 according to NBA.com. Which makes sense, given how Washington has scored over 130 points 4 times this season.
But defense does matter, and as a result Washington is 1-3 in games where they score over 130 points. Washington is also 0-2 in games where they score at least 120.
The San Antonio Spurs have the 5th best offensive rating in the NBA at 110.2. The Spurs are led by Demar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge. Both guys are scoring over 18 points per game, but that production hasn’t translated to consistent wins for San Antonio.
After starting the season 3-0, the Spurs have struggled mightily. San Antonio is 2-8 over their last 10 games. Their last win was on November 7, when they defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Wednesday night is the final meeting between the two teams. The first meeting was back on October 26, when the Spurs defeated the Wizards 124-122.
With both teams being top 10 in the NBA in offensive efficiency, expect this game to be a high scoring contest. Both teams are also near the bottom of the NBA when it comes to defensive efficiency. According to NBA.com, San Antonio is 26th in defensive efficiency, with a rating of 112.2. Washington is 29th in defensive efficiency, with a rating of 114.4.
This game might simply come down to who gets to 120 points first. But knowing Gregg Popovich and the Spurs coaching staff, they are most likely not willing to get into those type of contests.
Even with their current struggles, the San Antonio coaching staff is still one of the best in the league. A team that is so offensive reliant like Washington could potentially be easy for San Antonio to game plan against.
Therefore, the key for Washington in this game is for someone other than Bradley Beal to have a big game. Everyone knows what Beal is capable of, and he’s at the top of every team’s scouting report. If someone can step up and make San Antonio pay for focusing on Beal, that will go a long way in helping Washington get the win.
